Your Best Behavior: How To Act When You Are Pulled Over For Speeding

by Kenneth Graham

One of the most frustrating experiences is seeing blue and red lights flashing in your rear-view mirror, even if you know you are driving too fast. If you are pulled over for speeding, it is best to react gracefully so that you can go along your way. Here are some things you should do if you are pulled over law enforcement for speeding.

Move to a Safe Place

When you know you are being pulled over, be sure to pull over as fast as you can but in a place that is safe for both you and the officer. Move your vehicle to the right as far as you can so the officer has room to safely speak to you through your window.

There is a concern for many that individuals impersonating police officers prey on people by pulling them over in dark and uninhabited areas. If you are concerned this is happening to you, you first need to dial 911 on your phone and explain your concern. Explain that you are alone and in an area with no one around and are concerned you could be the victim of a police impersonation. They can then radio the officer pursuing you to ensure he or she is legitimate. If you cannot call or if you do not have a phone, drive to the nearest police station. If it was a police impersonator, he or she will not follow you to the police station.

Act Respectfully

Although getting pulled over for speeding is frustrating, you need to be respectful to the police officer. Roll your window down and answer the officer's questions. Have your identification, registration, and insurance information ready to hand over. If it is dark, you can turn your interior lights on so the officer can see inside. The officer will appreciate this behavior from you, and it may even result in your getting a warning instead of a ticket!

Avoid Being Nervous

It can be nerve-wracking to get pulled over by a police officer, especially if you have never been stopped before. It is natural to be nervous, but try not to be. Some people put out so much nervous energy that it can appear suspicious. It may appear you are trying to hide something from the officer, even if you are not. Acting this way can result in being removed from your car and temporarily detained if the officer has his or her suspicions that you could be up to no good.

If you received a traffic violation that you believe was unjust, contact local traffic attorneys and ask about what steps you should take next.
