The Benefit Categories Of Your Work-Related Injury

by Kenneth Graham

When you get hurt on the job, you will find that your employer has provided you with a useful way to deal with it. Workers' compensation insurance is paid for by your employer and is offered by a third party insurer. You, your employer, your doctor, and the workers' comp agency all work together to ensure that hurt workers can get better from their injuries without having to pay any money from their own pockets. You can divide up the benefits into several parts, so read on to learn more.

Medical help: As soon as you get injured you must seek treatment or you won't be able to take advantage of your workers' comp benefits. You may need to see only certain doctors and then be referred to other practitioners but anything ordered by that doctor is needed and will be covered. This includes medicine, hospitalizations, surgery, crutches and more. Whatever it takes to get you back to work will be approved and you must follow the doctor's orders when it comes to treatment and when to return to work.

Disability pay: When you have to stay out of work you will have some income coming in thanks to workers' comp. You won't get the entire amount you normally do (usually about 66.6%) but it is paid weekly and is tax-free. You can continue to draw this salary as long as the doctor orders it done.

Permanent disability pay: One of the worst things that can happen during your workday is to suffer from an injury that turns out to be permanent. These types of injuries can be divided into two categories:

1. It is immediately apparent that you have a permanent injury. This situation is reserved for catastrophic injuries like burns, amputations, spinal and head injuries and more.

2. Your injury was not thought at first to be permanent but has failed to heal. This can apply to injuries like back injuries, broken bones and more. This is known as maximum medical improvement (MMI).

Either of the above will trigger a settlement offer from the insurance company and your weekly pay will transition to a different level of pay. You may be offered a lump settlement that is broken up into regular payments or you might take the full amount right away. When your injury is permanent close consultation with a workers' attorney is advised.

Rehabilitation services: Along with permanent disability pay you might also be offered more services; some provided by the workers' comp carrier and some from your state. You can expect to have benefits like some of the below if it is determined that you can still work but not at your previous job:

1. Job training to help you get a different job

2. Resume, interview and other career help and support

3. Job location help

4. Career testing to identify interests, skills and job matching

About Me

Semi-Truck Accident 101: What Every Passenger Car Driver Should Understand

Being married to a semi-truck driver, I've learned a lot about what can happen when a semi-truck is involved in an accident. The risk of injuries to the other drivers is significant, but many people don't understand how to protect themselves financially after something like this happens. I've done years of research into the auto accident laws as they pertain to semi-trucks and the companies that own them. This site is a compilation of everything I've learned. I hope that it helps you if you've been affected by the carelessness or mistakes of a semi-truck driver, and encourages you to contact an attorney to protect your rights today.
